Game Boy Pocket IPS Display Controls & Settings Guide

GameTraderZero Game Boy Pocket systems equipped with our 2.8-inch laminated IPS display include a built-in On-Screen Display (OSD) that lets you customize how your games look and how the display behaves.

The display features 20 brightness levels, 36 color modes, multiple retro pixel effects, an optional battery indicator, frame blending, and more. It uses a 480 × 432 panel with integer scaling, giving the original Game Boy Pocket image a sharp, properly scaled presentation.

You can control the display in two ways: using the Game Boy Pocket’s A, B, and SELECT buttons, or using the hidden touch sensors installed inside the system.

Quick Brightness Adjustment

You don’t need to open the settings menu just to change the screen brightness.

Simply turn the Game Boy Pocket’s original contrast wheel.

On an original Game Boy Pocket, this wheel adjusted LCD contrast. With the upgraded IPS display, it instead controls the screen’s backlight across 20 brightness levels.

Using the Physical Buttons

The easiest way to control the display is with the Game Boy Pocket’s regular buttons.

1. Open the Settings Menu

Press:

SELECT + A + B

The OSD menu will appear on the screen.

2. Navigate

Once the menu is open:

A — Next / Increase

B — Previous / Decrease

Use A and B to move through the available settings.

3. Select a Setting

When the setting you want to change is highlighted, press:

SELECT + A

This enters the selected setting.

4. Change the Setting

Once inside the setting:

A — Increase / Next Option

B — Decrease / Previous Option

Continue until you’ve reached the option you want.

5. Confirm and Save

Press:

SELECT + A

Your selection will be confirmed and saved.

If you change your mind and want to leave without saving, press:

SELECT + B

Using the Touch Sensors

Your Game Boy Pocket also contains two hidden capacitive touch sensors. These provide another way to access and control the display menu.

The sensors are capacitive, so there’s no button to physically press. Simply touch the appropriate area of the shell with your finger.

1. Open the Settings Menu

Touch and hold both touch sensors simultaneously for 3 seconds.

The OSD menu will appear.

2. Navigate

Briefly tap either sensor:

Right Sensor — Next / Increase

Left Sensor — Previous / Decrease

3. Select a Setting

Highlight the setting you want and touch and hold the right sensor for 2 seconds.

4. Change the Setting

Use brief taps to make your adjustment:

Right Sensor — Increase / Next Option

Left Sensor — Decrease / Previous Option

5. Confirm and Save

Touch and hold the right sensor for 2 seconds to confirm and save your selection.

To exit without saving, touch and hold the left sensor for 2 seconds.

Display Settings Explained

Brightness

Brightness controls the intensity of the IPS backlight.

There are 20 brightness levels, allowing you to turn the display down for nighttime play or increase the brightness in a well-lit environment.

For normal use, the easiest way to adjust brightness is simply to use the Game Boy Pocket’s contrast wheel.

Color Mode

Color Mode changes the palette used to display Game Boy graphics.

Although Game Boy Pocket games are fundamentally monochrome, the IPS display can map those shades to different colors. The display includes 36 built-in color modes, giving you a wide variety of looks ranging from traditional monochrome-style palettes to more colorful alternatives.

Individual color modes can also be adjusted.

There isn’t a “correct” color mode. Choose whichever palette looks best to you.

Pixel Effect

Pixel Effect changes how the IPS panel reproduces the appearance of the original display.

Five modes are available:

Normal — A clean, sharp IPS image without a simulated LCD effect.

Retro Pixel — Adds a visible pixel-grid effect designed to more closely resemble the structure of an original Game Boy LCD.

Scanline 1 — Adds the first scanline-style display effect.

Scanline 2 — An alternative scanline effect with a different presentation.

Scanline 3 — A third scanline variation.

Try the different modes and choose whichever best matches the look you prefer. If you want the cleanest possible image, use Normal.

Battery Display

Battery Display turns the on-screen battery indicator ON or OFF.

Set it to ON if you’d like the upgraded display to show an estimate of the system’s remaining battery level.

If you’d prefer a completely clean image without an additional indicator, leave it OFF.

Touch Shortcut

Touch Shortcut enables or disables the touch sensors’ quick-access functions during normal gameplay.

Because the sensors are capacitive, it’s possible to accidentally activate one while handling the system.

If that happens frequently, set:

Touch Shortcut → OFF

This prevents accidental quick-setting changes while you’re playing. You can still use the sensors to operate the OSD menu.

FRM — Frame Blending

FRM enables or disables frame blending.

The original Game Boy Pocket’s LCD responded much more slowly than a modern IPS display. Some Game Boy games actually took advantage of this characteristic by rapidly alternating images between frames. On the original screen, those frames visually blended together and could create effects such as transparency.

A modern IPS display changes pixels much faster, so in certain games you may instead see flickering or an effect may appear differently than intended.

Turning FRM ON blends consecutive frames together to better reproduce those effects.

For the vast majority of games:

FRM → OFF

If you encounter unusual flickering, missing transparency, or another graphical effect that doesn’t look right, try:

FRM → ON

The display defaults to FRM OFF.

Quick Reference

Brightness: Turn the original contrast wheel.

Open Settings: SELECT + A + B

Next / Increase: A

Previous / Decrease: B

Select: SELECT + A

Save: SELECT + A

Cancel: SELECT + B

You can also open the menu by holding both touch sensors for 3 seconds.

Having Trouble?

If the OSD doesn’t appear when using the physical controls, make sure you’re pressing SELECT + A + B together.

When using the touch controls, remember that the sensors don’t physically click. Simply place your finger over each sensor area. To open the menu, touch both sensors simultaneously and hold them for the full 3 seconds.

If you find yourself accidentally changing display settings while playing, open the OSD and set Touch Shortcut to OFF.
